“You better like rum and mint, or you’re gonna get very, very bored!”
So said Alex, resident cocktail expert and masterclass host on our evening at the Bacardi Mojito Masterclass at Sygn Bar in Edinburgh.
It’s safe to say I was anything but bored.
Located in the West End of Edinburgh on Charlotte Lane, Sygn is a wonderful place to eat and drink in Edinburgh that I am particularly fond of as it is where I had my wedding party! Maybe I’m biased, but the super cool surroundings, quirky vibe and delicious cocktail menu don’t hurt either 🙂
Sygn are running a series of complimentary cocktail masterclasses, and this one took us through the history of the mojito – we were going to sample three mojitos along with some of Sygn’s amazing snack menu!
After sitting down for a little while chatting to the other attendees and having a cocktail topped with candyfloss (to cleanse the palette, it’s for science, okay?), we started off with an original recipe mojito, pictured below, which is made with white sugar instead of brown, and topped with bitters. The white sugar was cheaper when the drink was first being made in Cuba!
I liked this one, as you can tell from the intent look of concentration on my face.
Next up was the Brain Freeze, which was effectively the first one all whooshed together in the slushie machine! It was surprising the difference in taste that made – the sweetness from the first was turned a little more tart, the ice all the way through making it seem more minty.
It was at this point that we were given huge trays of delicious snacks but I didn’t take any photos of them as I was neck deep in chicken wings. You would have done the same, trust me.
The final flavour of the evening was my favourite of the three, a ‘new classic’ award winning drink called the Old Cuban. A mojito topped with prosecco; this was always going to be a new found love of mine.
Go check out one of my favourite places to go out in Edinburgh the next time you’ve got that Friday feeling, or that Tuesday feeling – whenever the mood takes you, Sygn will make you feel at home.
